Unfortunately I haven't read the book yet but I love that kind of novels, usually I read French ones. I recently read "Bel Ami" by Guy de Maupassant which was published circa half a century after the publication of Pride and Prejudice. I suppose that book was also made into a movie. I recommend it.
During a class trip to France I had an opportunity to watch the latest screen version of Pride and Prejudice thanks to my friend- a big fan of this book and Keira Knigthley. Unluckily I fell asleep in the middle of the movie probably because I was really tired.
I've seen the two versions of the opening scene and I prefer the second one. The second house is awesome, very warm, beautifully decorated, it's a pleasure to watch the movie due to the loveliness of this residence. It creates a warm ambiance. The girls are so vivid, full of life and charming. Keira Knightley is the perfect choice for this role. She looks so innocent and intelligent at the same time. Donald Sutherland is a very experienced, brilliant actor who incarnated Mr. Bennet.perfectly. Mrs. Bennet seems hysterical and peevish which is a good thing. Maybe I should try to watch again this movie.
I like the way YOU see it. Indeed, from what I know, this slightly impoverished, rural, and rather messy but cozy household is closer to what Austen intended for the Bennets than is commonly believed. Also, the bond between Lizzy and her father is presented much more effectively in the film adaptation than in the TV series, I think, mainly thanks to DS. Do give the movie another chance - you won't regret it! :)
